The Northern Ireland LEADER+ Programme is an initiative jointly funded by the European Union and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. It is designed specifically to provide support for micro-business development, which is one of the five key elements of the Northern Ireland Rural Development Programme.

The objective of the Northern Ireland LEADER+ Programme is to increase the economic and employment contribution that very small businesses, including small farms, make to the rural economy by testing out new approaches to micro business development and, where beneficial, to work in collaboration with similar partnerships in other rural areas.

Action One
LEADER+ Groups are assisted in developing high quality, innovative and sustainable rural development strategies of a pilot nature.

COLLAGE Ltd has established a coherent and effective strategy for the delivery of the LEADER+ programme in the Coleraine Borough area. This strategy is part of the Coleraine Borough Council Integrated Development Strategy for Economic, Community, Rural and Tourism Development for the Borough.

Action Two
The aim of Action 2 will be to encourage effective co-operation between rural areas to: achieve the necessary critical mass for a project to be viable; encourage LEADER+ groups to undertake complementary actions and add value to a project through the bringing together of complementary skills, know-how, products and/or measures.

Action Three
This action is for networking activity, where all LEADER+ Groups exchange ideas and share good practice through the UK LEADER+ Network. The European Commission is in the process of establishing a European Observatory of Rural Areas that will further promote networking at Transnational level.
